About Czarna Owca
Founded in 1991, we publish books across all genres, including titles that defy categorisation. This ethos is reflected in our name, Wydawnictwo Czarna Owca – which literally means Black Sheep Publishing House. We are a home for every intriguing story, even those that might be turned away elsewhere.
We are proud to be the publisher of Vincent V. Severski, a retired spy and bestselling author of espionage novels, with nearly one million copies sold in Poland alone. Before him, Polish writers of spy fiction were almost nonexistent.
Beyond espionage, we boast one of the strongest crime fiction portfolios in Poland. Over the past 15 years, we have published the bestselling Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, along with works by Camilla Läckberg, Liza Marklund, and Håkan Nesser. Our list also feature bestselling Polish crime writers, including Przemysław Piotrowski and Mieczysław Gorzka.
From the very beginning, our mission has been to publish books that not only entertain, but also open new horizons for our readers. We are proud to have published groundbreaking psychology and self-help books by authors such as Gabor Maté, Marshall Rosenberg, and Mark Wolynn. We’ve brought global non-fiction bestsellers like What If? to Polish readers while also highlighting important local works, including Kraków Pogrom, which explores lesser-known episodes of World War II. Our catalogue also includes books on sexuality, featuring well-known Polish author Dr Andrzej Depko and popular English podcaster Florence Bark (Come Curious).
We also publish acclaimed biographies of significant figures in modern history, such as Zygmunt Bauman and Lech Wałęsa.
Our journey continues to evolve. In 2020, we launched Echoes, an imprint dedicated to literary fiction, featuring acclaimed authors such as Marlon James (Black Leopard, Red Wolf), Virginia Feito (Mrs. March), and Felicia Berliner (Shmutz).
In 2022, we expanded further with ToTamto (This and That), an imprint for children’s literature. These books encourage curiosity about the world, as seen in What the Sky Tells Us and How Does the Octopus Sleep? They inspire children to explore important issues, discover their talents, and pursue their passions through engaging stories such as Da Vinci’s Cat.
Most recently, in 2023, we launched SeeYa, a YA imprint, focusing on stories for those navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood. These books explore relationships, sexuality, identity, and the journey of finding one’s own path in life.
