About Us

We have been present on the Polish market for over thirty years. Our publishing house was founded in 1991 as Jacek Santorski & Co Agencja Wydawnicza; in 2009 the name was changed to Wydawnictwo Czarna Owca. Czarna owca means „a black sheep” in Polish. It seems a fitting description, since we have never been afraid to go against the tide: it is our trademark from the very beginning.

We have always endavoured to publish books providing our readers not only with entertainment, but also knowledge. Our books about psychology have been designed to give genuine assistance, and those about spirituality to open up new horizons. Our offer includes best-selling Scandinavian detective stories, e.g. by Stieg Larsson, Liza Marklund, Camilla Läckberg, Michael Hjorth, Hans Rosenfeldt and Häkan Nesser, and thrillers by such authors as Simon Beckett, Jack Carr, J.D. Barker or C.J. Tudor. Our Polish authors include, among others, Vincent V. Severski, Przemysław Piotrowski, Piotr Kościelny, Marta Zaborowska. Mieczysław Gorzka and Stefan Darda will make their debut with us in 2023.

Books about psychology, including self-help books and how-to books, have always been one the cornerstones of our activity. We are proud to publish Polish translations od such world-famous authors as Gabor Maté, Irvin D. Yalom, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Alexander Lowen, Peter Levine and Marshall Rosenberg.

The following titles published by Czarna Owca have been present on Polish bestseller lists for a long time: The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, It Didnʼt Start with You by Mark Wolynn, Manʼs Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk and When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress by the above-mentioned Gabor Maté.

Czarna Owca publishes broadly understood humanities books (e.g. by Victor E. Frankl), literary works (e.g. by Tomasz Jastrun, Min Jin Lee, Edward Rutherfurd, Zbigniew Zborowski), non-fiction (e.g. by Randall Munroe, Christopher Berry-Dee) and books about spirituality (by Thich Nhat Hahn, Lama Ole Nydahl, Joseph Goldstein, Osho). We are still developing, constantly searching for the most interesting, unique titles.

In 2020 Czarna Owca created an imprint called Wydawnictwo Echa (Echa Publishing House), focusing on literary works. Wydawnictwo Echa features notable writers, e.g. Marlon James, Mariana Enriquez, Juan Garcia Vásquez and James McBride. We try to attract readers by outstanding books, award-winning authors, excellent translations and unique covers.

In 2022 we created another imprint, Wydawnictwo ToTamto (ToTamto Publishing House). It focuses on childrenʼs literature. We want to show the youngest readers their uniqueness and the beauty of the world. Our books make children look with curiosity at what is happening around them. They can get inspireed, involved in important matters, discover their talents and passions. Our publications make it easier for them to understand emotions, relationships, the diversity of the surrounding world and other people. We want children to realize their inherent value and to go through life independently, with curiosity and calm.

Last but not least – we have not forgotten young adults. From May 2023 valuable books for teenagers and young adults will be available in Polish bookstores with the SeeYA logo. Our publishing offer will cover various topics, such as entering maturity, relationships with family and friends, discovering oneʼs identity and sexuality, choosing a path in life, finding oneʼs place in society, dealing with everyday problems.

Thinking about slightly older readers and people with visual impairments we have created BIG LETTERS, i.e. books not only in a larger format, but above all a much larger print. The titles available in this series are printed on request and can be ordered at our website and at www.inverso.pl.
