About Czarna Owca
Founded in 1991, we publish books across all genres, including titles that defy categorization. This ethos is reflected in our name, Wydawnictwo Czarna Owca – which literally means Black Sheep Publishing House. We are a home for every intriguing story, even those that might be turned away elsewhere.
We are the publisher of Vincent V. Severski, a former intelligence officer and bestselling author whose novels have sold over one million copies in Poland. Alongside him, we have built one of the country’s strongest crime fiction lists, introducing readers to the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, as well as works by Camilla Läckberg, Liza Marklund, and Håkan Nesser. Our list also features bestselling Polish crime writers, including Przemysław Piotrowski and Mieczysław Gorzka.
From the very beginning, our mission has been to publish books that not only entertain, but also open new horizons for our readers. We are proud to have published groundbreaking psychology and self-help books by authors such as Gabor Maté, Marshall Rosenberg, and Mark Wolynn. We’ve brought global non-fiction bestsellers like What If? to Polish readers. We also publish acclaimed biographies of significant figures in modern history, such as Zygmunt Bauman and Lech Wałęsa.
Our journey continues to evolve. In 2020, we launched Echoes, an imprint dedicated to literary fiction, featuring acclaimed authors such as Marlon James (Black Leopard, Red Wolf), Virginia Feito (Mrs. March), and Felicia Berliner (Shmutz).
In 2022, we expanded further with ToTamto (This and That), an imprint for children’s literature. These books encourage curiosity about the world, as seen in What the Sky Tells Us and How Does the Octopus Sleep? They inspire children to explore important issues, discover their talents, and pursue their passions through engaging stories such as Da Vinci’s Cat.
In 2023, we launched SeeYa, a YA imprint, focusing on stories for those navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood. These books explore relationships, sexuality, identity, and the journey of finding one’s own path in life.
Most recently, we turned our attention eastward, publishing Heaven Official’s Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, which helped spark a new trend in Poland, and Strange Pictures by Uketsu — a bestseller that remained in Empik’s Top 40 for weeks.
